Sri Brhad-Bhagavatamrta is an epic work composed in Sanskrit during the sixteenth century by Sanatana Goswami, one of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s leading disciples. It is one of the first books written by any of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan.

Sri Brhad-bhagavatamrta is a transcendental literature that any serious student of Krishna theology or any serious practitioner of bhakti tradition must hold dear to the heart. In the form of two narratives, Srila Sanatana Goswami had described the science of bhakti through the journey of a devotee who tries to understand the devotees of Krishna by way of examination of various categories of devotees and through a sweet narrative of how a devotee attains spiritual perfection. It is pilgrims progress. Spiritual perfection takes efforts and these efforts are step by step process leading to the greatest perfection.

In Volume One of Sri Brhad-Bhagavatamrta, the great sage Narada, a pure devotee of Krishna, travels from earth to heaven and the spiritual world in search of the greatest recipient of Krishna’s mercy. As he proceeds on his journey, Narada meets many pure devotees of Krishna and gives evidence to show how that devotee has been favored by Krishna. Each devotee, embarrassed to hear himself praised, recommends that Narada visit another devotee.

Narada sees greater and greater manifestations of Krishna’s mercy, until he finds those pure souls who embody the complete manifestation of Krishna’s mercy–the exalted gopis of Vraja. Join Narada on his quest and discover his awe, love, and deepest appreciation as he grasps the gopis’ position as Krishna’s best devotees.

Volume 2 begins with the path of perfection thread by Gopal Kumara. Everyone in the spiritual world is a pure devotee of the Lord, yet there are degrees of love of God. Thus Uttara, who has been hearing of Narada’s travels as related in Volume 1, suspects rightly that Krishna must have a place above Vaikuntha, where Krishna is worshiped in awe and reverence. In that higher place, devotees must be able to fully manifest the highest stages of more intimate love for Krishna. In confirmation, in this volume Parikshit begins relating Gopa Kumara’s wondrous journey to Goloka, the highest place of all.

Gopa Kumar’s journey is complex as he moves to higher levels of devotion and love for Krishna. As his consciousness is purified, he finds himself in different realms of reality, each successively more saturated with love of God. At every stop, one thinks Gopa Kumar will surely be satisfied with the intense pleasure of associating with Krishna in His various attractive forms. After all, Krishna gives him personal attention and shows Gopa Kumar all kinds of mercy. But Gopa Kumar remains unsatisfied at heart and is thus pushed from within further and further on his journey, never quite finding rest and full peace.

But the journey itself is transforming Gopa Kumar and clarifying, sometimes unbeknown to him, his destiny–the attainment of his unique relationship with Krishna. And so, on and on he goes, and closer and closer he gets.

Hardcover, 982 pages, index, dust-jacket, 5.75″ x 8.75″. Volume two of three.
